Jesuit High School of Sacramento Summer School 2019

Jesuit High School's Summer School is a comprehensive program for boys and girls entering Grades 9-12 in the Fall of 2019. We offer high school preparatory, review and credit courses. The Summer School Application is completely online this year. You are strongly advised to review any course pre-requisites and consult with your child's academic counselor to ensure that your student is ready and qualified to take the course that you have requested. It is also your sole responsibility to be sure that your child's school will accept credit for this course. Daily attendance in class for credit classes is mandatory. If a student misses more than 2 days of class, credit cannot be granted for the course.

Registration Process

 Step 1 - Registration

Review the course(s) that you would like to take this summer from those listed below. Jesuit students have priority registration until May 1, 2019. All other students are placed in the order that they registered. (Register Early!!)  All courses are open to both Jesuit High School and non-Jesuit High School students unless otherwise noted below. You will only be charged the registration fee(s) when completing your registration below. The $50 registration fee is not refundable.

Step 2 - Pay tuition and purchase book

You'll receive an email confirming your student's placement in class on May 3rd. The balance of your tuition must be paid in full by May 30, 2019 by returning to this website and clicking "Make a Tuition Balance Payment." The required textbook list will be posted in early April. Students will be expected to have the required textbook in their possession on the first day of class. 



Credit Courses

Incoming Freshmen are only allowed to take Credit Courses after a careful review of the individual candidate’s academic performance, recommendations and test scores. Please contact Matthew Ramos, Director of Admissions at matthew.ramos@jesuithighschool.org for information.

All courses meet the same standards and cover the same material as the regular school year courses.  The following credit courses meet U.C. "a-g" requirements


Senior Christian Service--Independent Study - (5 credits) This course is open to Jesuit Seniors only. Your project must be pre-approved with the Christian Service Department. Students propose a service placement of their choice. They complete service with an agency or with a camp they identify and have approved in advance by Christian Service staff through an application (all resources are available in Google Classroom).

Minimum 50 hours of service or one-week overnight camp and course work (complete a reading list, participate in online reflections and assignments, maintain of an up-to-date service log, complete a final project) required. There are assignment deadlines throughout the summer, but the student does not report to campus.

Students must provide their own transportation to their service placements. In addition to registering online here, students must complete the Independent Study Application through Christian Service, available in Google Classroom.
   
Tuition: $250 plus $50 registration fee

 


Christian Service Remediation: This course is open to Jesuit Students only. This is a course for students who did not pass Freshman, Sophomore, or Junior Christian Service during the 2018-19 school year and therefore need to remediate their grade during the summer. You will receive email notification from the Christian Service Office with further details and a class meeting schedule if you need to enroll in this course.
   
Tuition: $400 plus $50 registration fee

 


Biology - (10 credits) A discovery approach is used with intensive hands-on experience through laboratory experiments. The course content includes the following topics: cells, functioning plants
and animals, genetics, evolution, energy and life, ecosystems, and ecology.

Pre-Requisite: Entering 10th grade or above

Length: June 11 - July 19, 2019  Time: 8:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.  Tuition: $750 plus $50 registration fee


Chemistry - (10 credits) This class is laboratory oriented. It includes metric measurement, general inorganic chemistry, formula writing, balancing of equations, the mole concept, atomic structure, heats of reactions, chemical equilibrium, organic and nuclear chemistry.

Pre-Requisite: Jesuit students: Must have completed Geometry or Geometry XL and Biology. Non-Jesuit students: Successful completion of Algebra I and Geometry OR Integrated Math 1 and 2.

Length: June 11 - July 19, 2019  Time: 8:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.  Tuition: $750 plus $50 registration fee


Physics - (10 Credits) Physics is the study of matter and energy.  Course content includes motion, force, energy, momentum, waves, light, electricity and magnetism.  Laboratory experiments and individual projects are an integral part of the course.  

Pre-Requisite: Jesuit students: Must have completed Algebra II and Chemistry. Non-Jesuit students: Completion of Algebra I and Algebra II OR Integrated Math 1, 2, and 3.

Modern World History - (5 or 10 credits) This course is designed for rising sophomores at Jesuit High School and will focus on major turning points that shaped the modern world.  The time period being addressed will range from the fourteenth century up to the world wars.  Students will trace the rise of democratic ideas and develop an understanding of the historical roots of current world issues, especially as they pertain to international relations.  The international topics of this time period will be analyzed in their historical, geographic, political, economic, and cultural contexts.  Multiple accounts of events will be considered in order to understand a variety of perspectives, with an ever-present emphasis on the big picture.  Students may elect to take a full year or one semester option. Students may take the first semester for three weeks (June 11-June 28 OR July 1- July 19) or two semesters for six weeks (June 11-July 19).  Indicate your choice below.

U.S. History - (5 or 10 credits) This course introduces the student to the many political, economic and social concepts and developments that have shaped American society.  Students may take the first semester for three weeks (June 11-June 28) or two semesters for six weeks.  Indicate your choice below.

Pre-Requisite: Junior standing in the Fall

Length: June 11 - June 28, 2019 (one semester) or July 19, 2019 (two semesters) Time: 8:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Tuition: $400 or $750 plus $50 registration fee


Geometry XL - (10 credits) This course is specifically designed for Jesuit High students who are advancing to Algebra 2 HONORS. In addition to Euclidean plane geometry and geometric figures, the course provides extensive theoretical consideration for the use of formal logic in proofs as well as problem solving. Trigonometry and its applications are introduced to enable the transition in to Algebra 2 Honors the next academic year. This placement requires the recommendation of your current Algebra teacher and the approval of your counselor and the Director of Scheduling.

Incoming freshman may not register for this course without prior Math Department Approval.

Pre-requisite: Jesuit students: Sophomore standing in the Fall. Jesuit students must obtain prior department approval. Non-Jesuit students: Successful completion of Algebra I OR Integrated Math 1 with a grade of A- or better. 

Length: June 11 - July 19, 2019  Time: 8:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.  Tuition: $750 plus $50 registration fee


Algebra II - (10 credits) Emphasis is placed on the solution of linear/quadratic equations/inequalities; linear/quadratic graphing; function concept/notation and the solution of word problems, including approximation. It is intended for students wishing to achieve advanced placement and those who need to retake Algebra II.

Pre-requisite: Jesuit students: Must have successfully completed Algebra I and Geometry. Jesuit students must obtain prior department approval. Non-Jesuit students: Completion of Algebra I and Geometry OR Integrated Math 1 and 2. 

Length: June 11 - July 19, 2019  Time: 8:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.  Tuition: $750 plus $50 registration fee


Pre-Calculus - (10 credits) This 6 week course prepares students for Calculus by introducing and reinforcing algebraic skills required for success in that course.  The first three weeks will focus on simplifying expressions, solving equations and inequalities, functions, graphing, transformations, higher degree polynomial functions, and inverse functions.  The last three weeks will focus on transcendental functions (exponential and logarithmic) and trigonometry.  Students will learn and apply fundamental identities and the Unit Circle to a variety of problems, apply transformations to graph trigonometric functions.  Building upon that, students will be expected to apply other trigonometric identities (addition/subtraction, double & half angle formulas, sum-to-product, and product-to-sum) to solve a variety of problems.  The course concludes with inverse trig functions, applying the laws of sines and cosines, vectors, and representing complex numbers in trigonometric form.

Prerequisites:  Jesuit students: Open to current 11th grade students earning an A in regular Algebra 2 or B in Algebra 2H and subject to instructor approval.  The course may also be taken to remediate a Pre-Calculus grade earned during the regular academic year. Non-Jesuit students: Must have successfully completed Algebra 2 or Integrated Math 1, 2, and 3.

Review & Enrichment Classes

Late Registration for Review and Enrichment Courses will close Friday, June 14th.


Algebra I Review - This course is designed for students who have completed a full year Algebra I course but need additional instruction in preparation for taking an accelerated or honors level course at Jesuit. The expectation is that students who successfully complete this course will demonstrate mastery of Algebra I concepts in line with those students taking accelerated Algebra 1 at Jesuit. Students will be assessed on a weekly basis and will take an exam similar in content and rigor to the year-end final exam in Algebra 1(XL).

College Application  Workshop -  Jesuit High School is offering a one week college application course for rising seniors.  This is a small class setting of 10:1, which means that each student will receive extensive instruction on tasks such as developing an individualized college application list, creating and refining a personal statement, navigating the college application process at JHS, filling out the Common App as well as going over the UC/CSU and other University Applications.  This course will guide and help each student in understanding every stage of the college application process. At the end of this workshop, students will have the potential to have most of the college application process completed. (There are a limited number of seats in this course.)

Length: June 10 - June 14 OR June 17 - June 24 Time: 8:00a.m. - 10:00a.m. OR 10:15 a.m. - 12:15p.m. Tuition: $250 plus $50 registration fee.

SAT I Prep (Math/English/Critical Reading) - This course is designed to build on what students have already learned. The math section includes a thorough review of the “new” math test including Algebra, Geometry, and Algebra II. The English section includes extensive practice in verbal reasoning, sentence completion, essay writing and critical reading. A full length practice test will be administered each week. Based on results of actual SAT tests, students receive written feedback with strategies for improvement. There are two separate sessions: one for math and one for verbal.

Length: June 24 - July 19, 2019  Verbal: 8:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m.  Math:  10:15 a.m. - 12:15 p.m.  Tuition: $275 each or $450 for both sections plus $50 registration fee
